The 2020 Season Kickoff

Anticipation at Callaway Competition: After months of waiting, the Corvette team can finally start the 2020 ADAC GT Masters season next weekend (July 31 to August 2). The DEKRA Lausitzring is the host for the start of a compact season of the “League of Super Sports Cars”. Callaway entry Jeffrey Schmidt celebrates his racing debut with the Corvette C7 GT3-R.

Who would have thought that the 2006 Herbert Grönemeyer song, “Zeit, dass sich was dreht” (Time, a twisting thing) would symbolize the situation in German motorsport years later? "If you don't move now, you'll wait forever”. We understood: Now if you get on your hooves, meaning - out of the home office, up from the sofa, into the race car. Or: Don't moan so much, look forward to life and especially to Season 14 of the ADAC GT Masters series.

Now the time has finally come and three months later than originally planned, the "League of Super Sports Cars" starts the 2020 season after the Corona lockdown. The DEKRA Lausitzring is the first step to an abbreviated 2020 racing calendar with a total of seven events in four months. Other venues are the Nürburgring (Germany), Hockenheimring (Germany), Sachsenring (Germany), Red Bull Ring (Austria), Zandvoort (Netherlands) and the finale in Oschersleben (Germany).

Despite the crippled economy due to the Corona pandemic, more than thirty super sports cars from seven different manufacturers as well as numerous and well-known drivers with Formula 1 and IndyCar experience and sports car aces will be chomping at the bit for the July 31 to August 2 weekend at Lausitzring, launching the strongest international GT racing series in the world. However, one thing will be sorely missed: the fans at the racetrack and in the paddock.

Even if the special conditions demand a lot from the organizers, teams and drivers, Callaway Competition, the longest-serving and most successful racing team of the ADAC GT Masters, is highly anticipating the start of the season. This season, the Corvette team from Leingarten Germany not only celebrates its 14th year participating in the championship series, but also its 25th company anniversary.

Team Boss Mike Gramke’s group will compete with the Corvette C7 GT3-R, specially developed in Leingarten with a refined design for 2020. Like last year, the Callaway Corvette will be piloted by Markus Pommer (29 / Heilbronn) and Swiss newcomer Jeffrey Schmidt (26 / Liestal) with their traditional car number: #77.

While Markus Pommer is already with Callaway for his second season, Jeffrey Schmidt is celebrating his racing debut with the Callaway Corvette on the 3.478 km DEKRA Lausitzring. Both drivers know the Lower Lusatia course very well, on which the ADAC GT Masters last raced in 2017. They’ve had successful results in other series too. The Callaway Competition team can also look back on a favorable past at the Lausitzring. With four wins there, the team from Leingarten is the most successful in the "Super Sports Car League". Most recently, Jules Gounon and Daniel Keilwitz won there with the 2016 Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R.

When the season starts next Saturday, the Callaway Corvette with Pommer and Schmidt will be the only Corvette in the top-class field. The Callaway customer team RWT will not participate in the ADAC GT Masters in 2020.

“I'm pleased that things are finally getting started again and I'm very excited to see how I can start the season with my new team, Callaway Competition. We can be completely satisfied with our preparation. There are a few more items that we have to work through to get the final details ironed out, but we just need a few more kilometers to do that. Overall, I'm optimistic. We were able to learn a lot about the new tires, which was very important. The car is already very good and with each lap I feel more comfortable, even considering we started from a very high baseline. So I'm confident that we'll be in good shape at the start.” Jeffrey Schmidt (26 / Liestal)

"After our promising test days, I can't wait to start the first race this year. Above all, it's nice to start again at the Lausitzring. I felt great during the tests. The team works very focused and has already done a super job in preparation. However, as the competition gets stronger every year, I'm anxious to see where we'll end up in qualifying. Naturally, we want and we have to take as many points with us as possible on the first weekend." Markus Pommer (29 / Heilbronn)

"We've been waiting a long time and now we can finally start the new season at the Lausitzring. We thank ADAC-Motorsport for their tireless efforts in these difficult times. The events will be different than we are used to, but the safety and health of everyone involved remains a top priority for all of us. In the preparatory phase, we did everything possible to finally start the season well-prepared. With Markus and Jeffrey, we have two strong and experienced drivers. We hope to be able to reconnect with the best with our package in 2020. We're ready and looking forward to the start of a special season." Mike Gramke (Team Boss)

"The whole team is feverishly anticipating the start of the season. We are racers and we're looking forward to fighting for success on the racetrack once again. Naturally, 2020 will be a challenge because of the shortened racing calendar, but we've prepared for it and we're happy to face it. A big thank you goes to our sponsors, partners and fans, without whom we couldn't have carried out our season plans so perfectly. We'll miss everyone at the racetrack and we hope for coordinated arrangements as part of the ADAC GT Masters program soon." André Zanke (Team Manager)
