ADAC GT MASTERS 2021
FIRST VICTORY OF THE SEASON FOR CALLAWAY COMPETITION ON THE RED BULL RING
Last weekend, Jeffrey Schmidt and Marvin Kirchhöfer took their first win of the season for Callaway Competition. In the second race on Sunday, the team lived up to its reputation as one of the favorites and, from starting in P2, captured the tenth victory for the Callaway Corvette on the Austrian racetrack. A strong third place finish in the first race on Saturday underlined the strong performance of the Callaway team from Leingarten in Baden-Württemberg.
Thrilling duels, violent crashes and exciting finishes made for a spectacular weekend (June 11-13) in the second round of the ADAC GT Masters series at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. At the end, spectators saw Jeffrey Schmidt (27 / Liestal) and Marvin Kirchhöfer (27 / Leipzig) cheering. The duo triumphed in Callaway Competition’s Corvette C7 GT3-R and gave the Corvette marque its tenth victory on the Alpine circuit in Styria, Austria.
The two Callaway drivers, Jeffrey Schmidt and Marvin Kirchhöfer, took their first podium of the season with a third-place finish on Saturday. The #77 Corvette started the race from ninth on the grid. Starting driver Jeffrey Schmidt was able to fight his way up to P6. Then he handed the cockpit over to Marvin Kirchhöfer who, at the finish, fought a close battle with Maximilian Buhk for third place. At the direction of the race officials, Marvin Kirchhöfer was penalized for exceeding track limits and had to let Buhk pass, but he immediately regained the last podium place.
After the team had laid the foundation for a successful weekend on Saturday, they continued their success on Sunday. In a spectacular Red Bull Ring race that was exciting right up to the last lap, the two Callaway drivers Jeffrey Schmidt and Marvin Kirchhöfer drove to their first win of the season on the 4.326-kilometer circuit in Austria in the Sunday race of the German GT Championship.
After a strong qualifying session, Marvin Kirchhöfer started the Sunday race from the front row. After just a few meters, Kirchhöfer passed pole setter, Audi driver Dennis Marschall, and took the lead from then on. Immediately after the start, Mercedes driver Maro Engel was involved in a serious crash, but survived unscathed. The result was a break of approximately 45 minutes to retrieve the Mercedes and repair a section of the racetrack’s guardrail. After the restart, Marvin Kirchhöfer and Jeffrey Schmidt, who took over the #77 Corvette in the middle of the race, stayed in the lead until the finish. During the entire race, the leading Corvette duo was under pressure from the second-place Audi, which was never more than 1.5 seconds behind. In the end, Jeffrey Schmidt brought home the first Corvette victory in the 2021 season with a lead of 0.842 seconds. While Schmidt won with the Corvette marque for the second time, it was the seventh win for Kirchhöfer in the Callaway Competition Corvette C7 GT3-R.
“It was a really strong weekend. Taking third place on Saturday was great for the team. You could tell that the guys on the team were hungry. The end result gave the team another boost and we were able to lay a good foundation in qualifying on Sunday morning for the start of the second race. The race was really demanding for both of us. Jeffrey managed the second half of the race very well; it wasn't as easy as it looked from the outside. The pace of the first three cars was nearly identical, but we were always able to gain a small lead during the restarts and hold our position. The Corvette works really well at the Red Bull Ring and we’re very happy about the successful weekend.” Marvin Kirchhöfer
“I’m very happy with the weekend. The hard work has finally paid off. The team did a fantastic job again and I'm happy that we were able to reward the guys with a win on Sunday. Winning at the Red Bull Ring is not as easy as it might look to the outside world. We couldn't afford to make mistakes; the competition was always hot on our heels on Sunday. We gave everything and we’re very happy with the win. At the start, we were able to stay out of the chaos and after the restarts we were able to gain a few meters right away. I hope that we can take the momentum with us to Zandvoort and continue where we left off at the Red Bull Ring. A big thank you to the entire team, sponsors, friends and all the fans, some of whom were finally back on the track.” Jeffrey Schmidt
“We finally got the payoff we deserved after we were beaten up in Oschersleben. Big kudos to the entire team, who did a flawless, perfect job during the whole weekend. This is exactly what you need to run upfront in the GT Masters.” Mike Gramke (Team Boss)
